Title: Mikel Merino. Signed
Post by: degsey66 on July 26, 2017, 02:36:40 PM
Word from Marca is that NUFC have agreed in principle to sign him from Borussia Dortmund on a season long loan.   Not sure how true,  nor do I know owt about him apart from apparently he's a midfielder.  Thoughts?

lee ryder posting about it too. loan or a permanent deal. never seen him, but if dortmund thought he had talent, he must have qualities. much more like a benitez signing this one, apparently a centre midfielder, who can play defence, also very good passer.

Spotted in Newcastle, looks like this is going ahead.

Benitez wanted him according to reports, so will be happy to have him. We really do need some more creativity from midfield, as right now Shelvey is the only real creative player, hopefully this guy could provide some but have no idea what he has to offer as don't think I have ever seen him play.

Lets face it getting anyone in at the moment that Benitez wants is a move in the right direction but I think we really need a few proven quality players in if we are not going to be facing a struggle this season.

Dortmund fans seem to think it's a loan w/ option. He didn't really have a shot in their midfield with Weigl, Sahin, Dahoud, Kagawa, Guerreiro, Castro and Rode all ahead of him.

Comes highly rated as a pivot midfielder, doesn't look owa strong but looks good on the ball.

Think this is a great signing, albeit a loan. If he is successful, we have the option to make it permanent. Desperate for some creativity & someone who can pass & bring technical skills to the side. You can't moan with this acquisition.

This is a good signing but unless we spend some real money on  real strength these young lads are in for a hard time

Really excited by this signing. Think we're okay in centre midfield now, some would argue we need another but I think Hayden is the defensive midfielder we will look to, and with Merino coming in it takes a bit of pressure of both him and Shelvey. Diame capable back up, not a starter though.

Merino looks pure class in the highlights I've seen, could be just what we need.

Does this push us more into a 433 with him shelvey & Hayden in midfield - Murphy & Ritchie either side of Gayle

Personally think shelvey can't be trusted in a 2 man midfield in this league as he doesn't have the concentration and aptitude to do it
Title: Re: Mikel Merino...?

i'd go

------------------------GAYLE--------------------------
---AARONS----------------------------------MURPHY---
----------------------------------------------------------
------MERINO--------SHELVEY-----HAYDEN------------
----------------------------------------------------------
-MANQUILLO---CLARK-------LEJEUNE-------YEDLIN-
----------------------------------------------------------
------------------------DARLOW-------------------------

Subs - Elliott/Dummett/Lascelles/Mbemba/Diame/Ritchie/De Jong/Perez/De Jong/Mitrovic

Squad is coming together, obviously needs two more at the very least. Ritchie coming off surgery, probably means he's behind on fitness, so Murphy could get the nod on the right. Certainly looks a young, pacey side, with shelvey & merino bringing their technical skills to the table. Can see Manquillo starting a LB (if no other LB is signed), might strike up a partnership with Merino on that side.

Like that team. Although I would start with Dummett over Manquillo (much better defensively), and Ritchie over Aarons or Murphy giving the side more options and being able to utilise the pace of Atsu and/or Murphy/Aarons off the bench. Really think our side is starting to come together, there's good depth in some of the key areas.

Aarons over Ritchie?!? What have you been drinking?

I'm not impressed by this signing...too many signings from abroad have been made where the player isn't a star fixture in their previous team...Haidara, Anita, Saivet... They may be playing a lot of games in those divisions but still be too slight build wise for the premier league...Perez, Gouffran, Xisco. This guy has both inadequacies...

I'm willing to give him a chance but he seems a little like a straw clutch of a signing.

Obviously Ritchie is first choice, but for spurs, he might be short of fitness coming off that recent surgery. Great to have options though in that final third though.

'The biggies' won't be arriving. Rafa is building a squad which he believes can give him the options and quality required to compete in the PL. 'The biggies' arrived 2 years ago in Wijnaldum, Thauvin, Mitrovic etc. and were woefully mismanaged and ended up getting relegated. Signing big players guarantees nothing, I'll choose to trust Rafa's judgement of any player we bring in, regardless of stature.

We do need a couple of "biggies". It's not wijnaldum's fault that Mike Ashley decided to back Steve Mcclaren to the tune of 80m. No other manager at nufc has had that sort of money to spend.

Nee funds left according to Lee Ryder :(

It doesn't surprise me. They haven't really generated any money this window, the previous big sales were based on staged payments (Sissoko, Wijnaldum, Townsend and Thauvin) so the money spent so far is probably covering about half the money taken in for these transfers.

I imagine this explains the ?16m or whatever it was demand from Lyon for Mitrovic. They'll never pay that, I reckon... they're just not PSG.

If the team managed to offload De Jong, Riviere, Mbemba, Hanley, Krul, Lazaar, Mitrovic, Colback, Saivet and Gamez, at best they'd be looking at a sum of ?20-?25m for the lot...that won't be enough for a decent striker and / or No.10 in this market.

anyone need a team for League 1? Only costs about ?300k a week in wages...

The permanent deal based on him playing 20 games, so he will be starting ahead of Hayden who is more the one for the future.

Thus near identical to the Atsu deal...I wonder if that's 20 apps or 20 starts...I still think Hayden will be first choice though.

I thought the Atsu deal was just 'cough up ?6.2m no later than a week after the season ends and he's yours'

Merino has to be first choice, he's played for Dortmund., Haydens not very good yet and is one for the future.

Trust me it wont, The majority of games last season hayden failed to really get hold of things in midfield and will struggle in the prem, he's one for the future, merino's the man and only one way to get him accustomed to english football quickly is to throw him straight in amongst it.

You could be correct but Rafa won't do this. Very few Premier League managers would.

Nice piece in the independent about Merino "It was the next day after I signed for Newcastle and I was with my mum walking near the river and a lot of people, were shaking my hand and going, "All the best mate," and "Have a good season," he recalls. "I looked at my mum and I was like "Woah! I've only just joined and they know me! In Dortmund even on the last day they didn't know!"

Looking like a bargain for ?9m, really hit the ground running and I knew Dortmund must have seen something special in this lad to sign him up for five years, theres no disgrace in being shipped out on loan the following season as they have an embarrassment of riches, some thought he would struggle with the pace of the prem, but as my old dad said there's no substitute for skill son,.aye.

Will definitely be signing him on a permanent basis bar disaster (permanent transfer apparently to be triggered by him making a certain number of appearances). At around ?9m will be an absolute steal in the current market

I think he's really been a good find - strong in the middle of the park and not afraid of putting some balls around. I hope he works on dead ball delivery - he could be a good replacement for an unreliable Shelvey.

Wasn't pleased with his dive against Swansea though.

9m is an absolute steal indeed... in the current market he could go for 25-30 and still seem like reasonable value IMHO.

problem is, we keep banging on about him, the media start to take interest, he keeps performing to a high level, and then the big clubs start talking to the agent, and it ends in tears. by his 20th performances, playing at this level, his agent would of fielded numerous calls and merino will have offers to play elsewhere. the most important man in the whole discussion is probably benitez and persuading him to stay long term. the contract is just a bit of paper, no real guarantee of anything.

i'll be amazed if we snap him up for ?9m or whatever the contract stipulates. he's worth ?20m + in the current market really (spanish u-21 too), so if dortmund dont want him, they will probably be touting him around for double the fee we could get for him.
Title: Re: Mikel Merino. Signed

Depends what the agreement is in writing...

If it says that if he makes a certain number of appearances then we must pay them the 9m and they must sell him to us then there might not be much they can do to tout him elsewhere... unless he's aware of other interest and turns us down, I can't see that happening - and even if he's aware of other interest, he seems to have his head screwed on and might see a couple of years here under Benitez as an excellent place to continue improving before making a big move when he'd be guaranteed first-team football at bigger teams (which just yet he might not?)

I read we have an obligation to buy for ?6.5m with a ?2.7m upfront payment for the loan itself. Once 20 games are played, he's ours - not sure how much Dortmund or any other club for that matter can do about that now that it's agreed.

To Me its very similar to the Thaivan situation when he left on loan, he ripped up the French league and probably added an extra 50% onto his value but we had to sell him for the price we agreed prior to his loan.

I just hope he agrees personal terms and FMA and his crew don't insult him with a low as F#ck wage offer that he turns down.

well done to who ever scouted this kid cos he looks like he can only get better and hes already better than what we used too

Cynical I know... but atleast if he has his head turned now, he's actually ours.

It's bound to happen to some players at some point in time... if they're loanee's then you have no insurance against them refusing to sign for us and then taking their pick of bigger clubs - atleast if they actually belong to us we'd get a decent wedge in for them at that point.

Small consolation (especially if not much gets re-invested) but it's still better than the club having its pants pulled down... don't have to look too far up the road to see what happens if the club f***s itself over constantly over its transfer-related dealings.

Or back at home, seeing as NUFC have had so many. I.e. let's flog Carroll / Ba / Cabaye and obtain no replacement...

Sure....

Would you rather we let players flourish on loan and then make their parent clubs lots of cash, or that they belong to NUFC and make NUFC lots of cash.
Whether it gets reinvested into fee's for replacement players (or frittered away on wages and other costs of running the club) would you rather be in the position we're in (ie: no financial danger whatsoever, warchests opened in event of relegations, playing at a level that's consistently bottom half-ish premier league or top 2 championship)... or the position that the mob up the road are in (ie: making massive losses that their chairment can't afford, having to pay transfer fee's for players they never even sign, zero funds available in event of relegation, player sales fee's disappear 100% into thin air, consistently around relegation zone of PL and threatening to drop like a stone for years... and now fulfilling the inevitable)?

Seriously, whether all the money gets spent on new players or just some of it, it's FAR, FAR better for the club to be stable financially and have an owner who is unwilling to allow the club to be outside the top division (even if he doesn't care a jot about how well we actually do whilst in that top devision)... there are much worse positions to be in.

Great news he looks to be a class act.

Great news, class act and only going to improve!

Forget where else we need money spent in Jan and whether this impacts on that, it's a signing we'd have been barmy to pass on

Exactly my thoughts too. Absolutely delighted we've signed this lad for 5 years. He's top quality.
