Based on the pre-season line-ups I would guess:

Elliot
Manquillo
Dummett
Lejeune
Clarke

Hayden
Shelvey

Atsu
Ritchie

de Jong
Gayle

But plenty of time for things to change...

Those lineups strike fear into my soul. Any or all of them. Nowhere near Prem standard, even the best players are a bit average for this league.

Bit average? You do know we've just got promoted, how on earth are we going to have anything better at this stage. This season is about finishing 17th or above, stabilising the club, and continuing to build a stronger squad, in the hope of slow progression towards a top half finish. You can then think about quality, wow signings.

Personally think it's a decent first XI. Pace, energy, and above all, team togetherness & spirit. Admittedly, I'd rather have merino, Gayle & a fit Yedlin in that XI, but that will come.

Personally I'd go for:-

                       Elliott

Manquillo lejeuene Clarke dummett

                     Hayden
              Shelvey. Merino

    Ritchie.                     Murphy
                     Gayle

Think we need the extra body in midfield but don't think Rafa will play that do can expect to see Perez start at number 10 and merino be on bench

If anything, it's probably the best time to play Spurs. Catch them cold, nobody has any rhythm or form going into first weekend, so don't see why we can't pick up something in all honesty. Much rather play Spurs now, than in march or April

Well you're a twit then and not much of a fan because you clearly didn't know that we have another pre-season match to play tomorrow at home to Hellas Verona, so you could have previewed that match first in which the starting line-up may give us a better idea as to who will start against Spurs.  :suicide:

I'm positive we will win and take 6/7 points from our first 3 and not spend the money we need to before the window closes

Left side is a huge worry a bonus could be son isn't meant to be fit and that could mean the 30M donkey starting which would help alot

Hope Mitro has his head up after scoring and can put himself a bit more as we need him to be at his best in the current situation, as others have said I would consider packing the midfield as Alli/Wanyama/Dier could totally over run us

I'm aware we just got promoted. I'm also aware that the above is framing the situation as though we're some plucky newcomer a la Huddersfield or Bournemouth a few years ago, trying to establish ourselves with the big boys and feeling our way in slowly.

Frankly that's bollocks, it's embarrassing we were down there in the first place. With our finances / support / stadium / all the rest of it, we should be able to throw a bit of cash at players to at least compete with Watford et al by this stage. We are behaving exactly like the sort of team you're describing but that is not what Newcastle are, and our reputation as a big, proud club - at least, for a little while yet - still precedes us.

Whether Ashley finally puts that perception to bed during his tenure remains to be seen - maybe he will - but I refuse to be happy about a summer like this cos, you know, that's 'what we should be expecting'. Fans need to show a bit of resistance to being f***ed around like this, not just passively assume our roles and bend over.

Think Wanyama, Son, Rose and trippier are injured. Dier might fill in at Right bck or alderwiereld, meaning Davies might play left back. they havent bought any new signings and at a new ground, hopefully that's enough to help because Alli, Kane and Erikson are amazing. Fingers crossed and all that. Remember when Krul made about 16 saves for a 1-0 and when Ameobi scored a screamer at White Hart Lane. oh yeah 5-1 :D

Welcome back Premier league football!!

Comfortable toon win here, spuds don't travel north well and rose has sown some seeds of discontent in their camp. Kane is going to struggle getting on the end of anything inside Clarks back pocket and I'm backing Mitro to have a good game and cause them all sorts of problems

Really looking forward to the game!

The way rafa sets up is defence minded to try to keep us in the game and sneak a goal maybe from a set piece or from a corner.

Tottenham have got a really good team, yes they have a lot of injuries and we are there bogey team but they still have quality all over the pitch. We have to keep eriksen and alli quiet which will be hard to do!

If we do start mitrovic he has to keep a cool head when things dont go his way

Fingers crossed for a good performance,COME ON THE TOON!

Very much a side staying loyal to last year. Probably get two or three games to prove, then the new additions begin to start like merino/Murphy etc.

Good time to play Spurs today, might nick a draw. If we take the lead and hold out, then bring on Aarons and Murphy to counter

The lads have done well against an evidently much better team.

Dembele in the middle for them is a tough tough player to play against, Eriksen looking to cause problems in the no.10 role too.

Other than that I think we're matching them pretty well, Lejeune looks great and it's a shame he's had to go off. For me though, Atsu is the key man in the half for us. Looked very very good, can beat his man most times and get a ball across which for a winger is literally all you can ask.

Love having the football back, HWTL!

I'd expect many of our games playing out like this. We don't have the quality + Rafa tactics will always been sit tight and counter. Disappointed with the injuries, means we don't see the exciting potential of Murphy or Aarons. Expect mitrovic for Gayle at some point

What do you mean no creativity? We have creative players on the pitch in Shelvey, Atsu & Perez but we're playing against a very good defensive side who won't give you many opportunities to expose them. Not sure creativity is really our issue here.

Here we go again. Different level in the PL where a team not playing at their best beats us easily. We still have a muppet midfielder who can't control his stupidity and gets sent off for a childish sly stamp except the fool does it right in front of the ref. A total tosspot.  It's going to be a long old season.

Jonjo should never play for us again. Just can't afford that stupidity in today's game. Had it at forest last year( wolves last year, and now this. Liability

It was stupid but Ali is a snidey little s*** who is brilliant at winding players up and getting away with it. He was rolling around on the floor and squealing like a stuck pig. I think Shelvey had a brain fart and thought he'd give him something to squeal about. I f***ing hate Spurs.

It's going to be a long season if our players lose control that easily. We looked capable of grinding a draw but the better team won comfortably at the end. Just have to hope there is 3 teams worse than us this season

We were playing the best passing side in the league and a side that score goals for fun I am not sure what you were expecting especially going down to ten men for most of the second half.

f***ing stupid by shelvey - alli is a little clown who tries wind opposition up and shelvey fell for it

Thought we were comfortable first half without threatening.
After sending off we should of made a change straight away but I'm guessing he didn't want to as we only had the one left and Gayle was never gonna see the 90 out after missing pre season.

Plus points - atsu looks much better then he did last season, lejeune looked decent hope injury isn't too bad, defence looked ok & merino looks like he has an eye for a pass

Lose to Huddersfield will be the ultimate embarrassment and a clear sign of regression this summer, seeing as we went there and win only three months ago. Think Rafa will walk if we lose that one, looks like he given up on the regime at NUFC in that post match interview.

The only reason we stayed in that game for any length of time was down to Rafa as Spurs were a class above us. But he cannot work miracles. Game one and injuries could already be a problem.

The team look well drilled and fit. It is clear that Rafa is trying to add more pace to play on the break. Atsu played his part in that plan. In the first half it worked in patches, but went out of the window with Shelveys madness.

Crazy situation. Give Rafa even half a chance and he will get us into mid table. A big three weeks for us in the window

Did half of the people here watch the match?! For 60 mins we easily held our own against apparently "the best 11" in the league, we kept Kane quiet bar the one chance which Elliott made a right save from, and if Perez had played Shelvey instead of Gayle it could've had a different outcome.

As for Shelvey, yes it was so stupid, and not what match day captain should be doing, but anyone saying that he should be dropped and sold is stupid. In the squad he is probably one of a select few who is good enough for this league, and on his day, he see's and reads the game like no other. As for Alli, who played the entire game constantly looking to wind players up, probably should have been booked for throwing the ball away. Kane could've been sent off as well.

Over all I'm happy with what I saw, I think we played well and with another few signings we will stay up, UNITED!

Spurs started very poorly and grew into the game. Yes they had few chanced, but NUFC didn't do anything in 90 mins that was close to scoring.

The red card only compounded issues. In reality Newcastle were second rate, I watched the game with fans of Spurs, Arsenal and Manchester United and they thought NUFC was dreadful. They complained that there was no clear attacking game plan, that Perez and Ritchie weren't making attempts and that Shelvey kept launching route 1 balls to nowhere. They have no sympathy for the team or the position with a hideous owner either.

A great occasion spolied by a f*cking idiot, that would be my headline if I owned a newspaper...those who have stopped going because of fat Mike need a rethink, I would not have missed that atmosphere at the start of this match for anything in the world, the love for Benitez is overwhelming at times seriously, and matches anything I felt with SBR and KK, really is heart warming to hear the huge roar from the crowd whenever this little fat balding Spanish fella stands up, or smiles, or waves....No doubt he gets the message we still "want you to staaaaaaaay, Raaafa Ben-it-ez (etc.)"

Having not read any reports I'm hoping Shelveys is not being seen as another racist incident, after his pleading he was not a racist last December, that was a disgraceful incident with Saiss last season I remember typing this

I remember many years ago the then Villa manager john gregory saying if he lived to be 100 he will never undertand what goes on in Collymore's head, Rafa must be thinking the same about Shelvey, regardless if it was mild or full-on racism in the current climate with football worldwide leading the way in kicking racism out of sport and that dumbfuck goes and drags the club through this sh*t, I can't see the FA entertaining an appeal, seriously not on this issue which they have been campaigning for years to get through every footballers thick skull, and most get it, Shelvey however will have to learn the hard way, like all idiots do.  :nonono:

He is one of those players who cannot be calmed down once he see's red, once he goes he goes and nothing anyone can do, and mark my words that will never ever change,..it is a mental issue where everything shuts down and he is literally out of control for those 5 or 10 seconds, other players have had similar problems in the past, Souness for example, I've seen him stand over a player who was already lying down (after being hacked by the scottish c*nt), grab him by the shirt collar and shake his fist right in his face, and Keane was another who could not be calmed down once he lost it, (except when he was grateful to Beckham for dragging him away from Big Al that day)............but like I say Shelvey will never change he was today meant to lead the way lead by example being the highest paid at the club, and the captain, f*cking total waster cost us the match.  :nonono:

Positives for me were Atsu, Toon1 I noticed you said he was better than last season, I reckon that is because he had been loaned out for about four seasons running thrown from pillar to post and just needed a club to make him feel loved and feel wanted and feel settled. today he was fantastic and our best chance of creating something,I also thought Manquillo was great considering all the criticism he has had about his performances for the SMB, rafa was not really sure what to do with only having one choice as a sub, personally i would have had Merino on much sooner, in fact I would have started him ahead of Hayden, he brought some really good vision and calmness to our midfield and should get his chance now that s***-for-brains is banned

Nice feeling to be back in PL. Quite a different level of excitment and at least we can appreciate the quality of the visiting team  :D

I found the team well drilled 1st half but we were playing incredibly deep. I hope the game plan will not be like that for the rest of the whole season, that is, to play deep and organised in defense, only to strike with rapid counters via our fast wingers.
I found our total absence of presence in midfield shocking, even before the red card. Why De Jong was not even on the bench, I have no idea : we have a potential good number 10 and we don't use him.

Only positives for me were Lejeune and Merino.

Shelvey did Rafa a huge favour. By doing what he did he took all the pressure off him. On top of that you have Ashley doing his bit. Dummett did last 6 minutes but let's face it, he was up against Sissoko. Based on his short spell, Merino looks OK.
