Title: TOON V MAN UTD
Post by: peachy on February 08, 2018, 09:04:18 AM
Sunday, 11th February, 2018
Kick off: 2.15pm at SJP
Live on SkySports Main Event

(https://imagesvc.timeincapp.com/v3/fan/image?url=https%3A%2F%2Fnewcastletoons.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2Fgetty-images%2F2017%2F11%2F875797154-manchester-united-v-newcastle-united-premier-league.jpg.jpg&c=sc&w=850&h=560)

Here we go again, if we are gonna start winning at home again why not kick it off by beating one of the biggest clubs on the planet, Man Utd have lost 3 away games so far this season, Spurs, Chelsea and 'uddersfield and arrive on Tyneside with no injury worries (unfortunately), whereas our only concern is Clarks knee injury, but saying that, I would rather Mbemba started anyway but there's little chance of that because Lejeune is fit again.

Hopefully Slimani will make his full debut and we can get some kind of idea as to how the rest of our season is gonna pan out, Darlow did little wrong at Palace and was unlucky not to save the penalty so I would expect him to keep his place.

possible team:

DARLOW

YEDLIN     LASCELLES     LEJEUNE    DUMMETT

SHELVEY    MERINO

MURPHY     PEREZ     KENEDY

SLIMANI

Score prediction: 2-1

Howay the Lads.

1-4. Lukaku has just resumed scoring and I am sure we can help Sanchez get the ball rolling too. Gayle to score first.

That luck NUFC rode against Palace with some shocking box defending when inviting pressure will not be possible to be replicated against direct opposition.

i did have this game down as a loss on my last 16 predictions but when the time arrives i just can't bring myself to predict a defeat,......if 'uddersfield can do them, so can we, bring'em on.

I have that horrible feeling we are playing them at the wrong time and they are going to trounce us.
But* im optimistic that it will be a game we should have won come final whistle, but end up with a draw or a narrow loss

See, typically teams near the bottom tend to up their game around this time and start getting a few plucky surprise wins in the bag. But I have no faith in Newcastle doing that - we're just too anaemic, and this team can't handle the pressure of playing at home.

Keep the goal difference respectable, that's gotta be the aim. We need to grind out a few 1-0's against the lesser teams left in the diary, that's as good as I see it getting.

Tend to agree I can?t see us getting a win might nick a draw my prediction is a 1-3 defeat in this one unfortunately. I have no time at all for Man U and their plastic supporters so I hope I am way off the mark.

I would say 99.9% of toon fans agree with Grimey mate, the match is a sell out as it always is and historically toon fans have turned up at this fixture expecting to lose, but the odd times we do beat them makes it all worthwhile.

Only change I would say to the above is Diame has been playing that well last couple of games he deserves to start

Hasn?t Mourinho failed to ever beat us at St James in the league :D

I think we played Chelsea right time few weeks ago. Since that they were bummed by Bournemouth and Watford. Swansea beat Liverpool when dippers were flying high.
Like someone said, it seems we are there for taking against these big clubs and that makes me sick. SJP once was place where teams feared to come. Now we are tend to be happy for a draw against tems like Brighton ffs.

Cos we couldnt beat Brighton, Burnley and Swansea at home, we have to beat one or two big clubs in our remaining games. Would love if we give them a go but all I see is one boring game between two defensive-minded manager.
Another 1-1 at best but think we gonna lose 1-2

so we all expect to lose, so anything else is a bonus, that's how it always is against these.....hopefully the day will come when we go into this fixture actually expecting to win.

I would swap Atsu for Perez and the main man Diame for Shelvey - never expected to say that.

The pace of Atsu, Kennedy and Murphy with the athleticism and physicality of Slimani. We may even be able to hurt teams for the first time in ages, especially on the break. Probably in dreamland. A lot riding on that man Slimani. He may well turn out to be a dud.

On tactics. We actually did have a go at them at Old Trafford. This was during a batch of six or so games where we played two up front and did attack teams from the outset. We took the lead at OT and really should have been winning a half time, but conceded two. We still had a go second half, but got picked off and got a chasing.

I hope that he plays it tight (he will) and with the extra quality of Slimani and Kennedy, plus the rapidly improving Murphy, we can actually convert one of the few chances that come our way.

Quote from The Captain:
?We?ll make it dirty and nasty on Sunday?, he said. ?They?ve got big players on big wages but I can tell you we?ll have more heart and more hunger than they will.? - very true

Never expected him to start Sunday - was hoping he might get run out near end if it was close game - with free weekend next week might as well not risk him  from start if not 100%

Don't think Mourinho enjoys playing against us, Sanchez hasn't scored against us, and it's a game everyone expects us to get stuffed in. For those reasons I think we might have a chance if the crowd gets behind them

Not really being realistic. Doesn?t mean to say that we can?t. I don?t expect much against any of the top six sides so the draw we got against Liverpool was a bonus. Of course I still hope we will win otherwise there would be no point in me watching the game on sky tomorrow.

Other than Kennedy I don't understand the others. Pointless and a waste of wages. Mike Ashley has proved he can't run a successful or semi successful football club. I hope we don't get embarrassed on Sky Sports the team need a good performance. From the team like not just Kennedy.

Dubravka looked the buisness between the sticks. Chuffed to bits with the win, will be even more chuffed if we build on it next game.

Looks like we really are Jose 's boggie team.

Shelvey looked the best he has in years
Keepers saves were good, but any keeper can have a good day with shot stopping, but his decision making and coming for crosses was class, he looked really impressive today

Joselu came on and reminded me how much I hate him

Great win today. Utto 13th now. Not the biggest diame fan but he put in a shift today and has looked good for us in recent games. Our defence looked solid too this result was badly needed and we might kick on a bit now and get in the top half

Jose was fair in the after match interview. The opposite of the usual whiners like Mark Hughes or Moyes.
I think we may finally have the keeper we need.
We had the luck today - but we've had so bloody little all season, we're still in defecit
Shelvey and Diame played as we know they can but have NOT done much of this season.
We need another half dozen wins like this. This league is going to go to the last minutes for 3 relegation spots to be decided from 7 or 8
Title: Re: TOON V MAN UTD
Post by: TK on February 11, 2018, 05:25:03 PM
We looked better last time out with Kenedy added in, we looked better today with Dubravka... If Slimani provides any kind of threat at all (and if we have options to buy all three), then I think it might be fair to say Rafa's January window a resounding success?

Great win. We have some very smart and streetwise players (Shelvey, Ritchie, Perez) and some not so smart ones (Yedlin, Kenedy, Atsu). I'd sooner see a Shearer style hold-the-ball-in-the-corner more often though, no wonder we've conceded so many late ones!
Title: Re: TOON V MAN UTD
Post by: Basileus on February 11, 2018, 05:55:16 PM
I believe we have an option on all 3 players.
Ashley won't pay what Leicester want for Slimani.
The Serbian lad has put a backbone back into NUFC
Players like Ljeune Lascelles Dummett and co will all come on leaps and bounds with someone behind them they can rely on.
We WON'T get Kenedy. He'll go back to Chelsea
I recall recently reading one reporter RIGHTLY saying how ridiculous it was that Newcastle have to go for loans and scraps from far "smaller" clubs like Leicester instead of buying what is actually NEEDED

Days like these. The stadium jumping, Blaydon Races ringing out, the team giving it all to overturn the odds. For a Geordie, no where like SJP on days like today.

This team gives it all. That's been the same all season. Today we earned the breaks that came our way. The effort deserved it. Great leadership on the pitch. Last ditch tackles. Bodies on the line and nobody letting their teammates down.

Kennedy adds quality to our workrate and organisation. Shelvey easily had his best game. Instead of dropping into defence to play quarterback, he played further forward, got the ball under pressure and played the mix of short and long passes that made the team tick. Diame was terrific in breaking up play and putting pressure on Pogba.

Lejune looked excellent next to Lascelles. He is the best passer that we have in our defence. With Lascelles beside him, he also looked a decent defender. The keeper is a big guy, with a real presence in the box. A debut to dream of.

If Slimani can add some quality upfront, then we have a real chance of staying up. It is so tight that 10 more points would surely do it. We need 3 teams to get detached. Chelsea please beat WBA tomorrow. That would surely finish them.

After the Huddersfield result I feared the worst today. The team delivered. Still many more battles, but this team is up for it.

Title: Re: TOON V MAN UTD

Not sure it?s a question of ?if? Slimani can produce now, it?s ?when? he produces. Our squad is so poor, look a top the impact Kenedy & Dubravka have had. Slimani will score goals, as he?s far superior to what we?ve got right now.

Actually quite optimistic right now. Should of held on vs Swansea for the win, should of won at Palace & now won against United. Every game seems we can scrap something.
Title: Re: TOON V MAN UTD
Post by: Toon1 on February 11, 2018, 06:46:13 PM
Get the f**k in there :D what a result we rode our luck a bit but also had some against us as was penalty just before half time!

In last 9 games that?s 13 points with 3 wins, 4 draws & 2 defeats (both against city!)

We pressed the ball much higher up pitch again today - every good performance we have done that so hopefully it continues longer term.

The keeper looked very assured and confident - we?ve needed someone to show confidence back there for years it?s very early but hopefully he is the one we been looking for

Defence played very well - lejuene has taken a lot of stick but he did well today

Shelvey had one of his best games for us he needs to continue to play but higher up the pitch and Diame looks a different player last few weeks

I?ve been very critical of Ritchie this year but that was his best performance by a mile and good goal to top it off. Kennedy continues to impress.

Still weak up top so hopefully slimani will add the presence we need

For people asking about options to buy I?m sure there?s only the keeper with that written into the loan deal
Title: Re: TOON V MAN UTD
Post by: ohsholaameobi on February 11, 2018, 07:01:13 PM
Those 3 players we've got on loan, Dubravka has a clause to buy for ?4m in the summer.
Slimani I think has a ?20m clause but it obviously depends how well he does. He's 29 but he is a prolific striker - all his highlights don't show great goals but the goals of someone who knows where the net is.
Kenedy wasn't very good today and I think his decision making needs to improve, however can see why Chelsea wanted to keep him as he has skill, pace, and creativity in abundance. Would be tough to buy him.

Good result, unexpected but definitely deserved. The better team won and on reflection it was a good performance. Let's keep that going at home - there is NO REASON that this level of performance can't be the norm.

Shelvey, Diame, the CBs and Dubravka were all outstanding - the spine of the team needs to play that way all the time and to that standard and it will yield results.

Pleased for Ritchie - a lot of criticism on here for him but I am not sure why - he's pretty much the team's Gutierrez these days and does a good job. Gayle is doing well too - yes, not scoring, but leading the line well.

My final point would be that Manchester United never get penalties awarded against them, and that was a clear one. So ridiculous. The same applies for that Valencia kick on Atsu - clear red card. I hope that their fans can see that they get away with far more than any other team.

The confidence Dubravka brought to our defence was incredible. I have never seen any of them play as a unit as they did today. Shelvey had his best game ever for us and backed up by Diame. Ritchie did what Ritchie does. Score important goals. Gayle tried without much success and Perez went AWOL for most of the game. Kenedy is still learning his trade but will improve when he is 100% match fit.

good point about Ritchie. That was somehow only his first goal this season despite the quality finish, but his main quality has been defensive this year - the guy puts in a shift every game and we often are a worse side without him.

I like this Dubravka fellow, have high hopes for him. Maybe he can be our next Given. We have gone too long without someone like Given or Srnicek under the bar.

I dont understand why the lads csnt put in a shift like this most weekends especislly at home. I thought the fans were quiet throughout. I would of thought with 50k plus we would of been alot louder. Its like highbury when the opposition has the ball.. Perez Kennedy and Gayle did struggle in the latter stages but they kept on making runs and trying to go forward. Thats all we want our team to try in each game.. Darlow is unlucky to now have to compete with the Slovakian. He was tremendous.

I celebrated like mad when the goal went in. It was an absolutely heroic, stupendous effort from the lads. 100% to all of them. It still gives me goosebumps now sitting in my local pub in Ipswich and Ritchie smashing the ball in the back of the net making it 1-0.

Toon Army!!!

For all Ritchie hasn't contributed much of late still has 6 assists this season, 3 more than anyone else and as many as Firmino, Willian, Coutinho and Eriksen to name a few...

Precisely why no one should be on his back.
