Whitley Bay- what happened?
« on: May 20, 2017, 12:29:45 AM »
I lived in Whitley Bay from aged 4 until 17. We moved to Tynemouth then again back to Whitley Bay when I was I my 20s and working down South.

Over the years the decline of the place has been rapid. It looked like a ghost town the last time I stayed there about 4 years ago. The sea front is how I remember it but the town itself was in poor order. The night life was ok but even that seemed to be in need of a boost. We visited Tynemouth and that was still lively.

Maybe as a young adolescent I thought it was better than it actually was. It was always rough and ready on the front where the amusements were, but I used to love the Spannish City. Another place I loved was Churchill Playing Fields and of course the beach spent many happy hours at each of these locations.

Well I'm moving to the coast, and it looks fine to me.

The coastline is still as lovely as ever and there are some great properties,it's just the town and the front seemed to have been neglected. My brother had a nice property on Preston Grange Estate for years and I guess with so many good shopping places only a metro ride away I suppose the local shops will have been affected.

Many of what used to be boarding houses are now permanently occupied long term, some deservedly owing to circumstances, others just feckless and workshy, courtesy of the DSS. Who can blame Landlords guaranteed a regular income?

This has arguably had a negative impact on the tourist trade.

Nice one. I sold up and moved a bit further up the coast. In northumberland now right opposite the beach.

Very pleasant when we moved to Tynemouth we lived in Percy Gardens and that property over looked the sea. That was a great place to live. As I say I moved away years ago and I do miss living close to the sea. My nearest place is Brighton and the beach there is sh*** like many of the beaches on the Sussex coast. There are some nice beaches in Kent and Dorset but that's a bit of a treck from where I live.

Its a cracking spot. Had a couple of smallish ones that went back. Seen some double figured ones come out though.
